Lectures Series/School Programs

Marc’s lecture series includes two programs which can be adapted to any age group or level of expertise. He appears frequently at public schools, colleges, public libraries and music clubs. Each energetic program features live performance, some listening (or viewing in the case of the film program) ,audience participation and a question and answer session.

Music Is...

This program was written while Marc was at NCSA and is presented mostly to school-age children. In the course of one class period Marc explains the construction of a piece of popular music as opposed to a classical piece. The objective is to teach that the long and short forms in music have the same basic building blocks. This interactive and fast-paced program is a great deal of fun for the audience as well as the presenter! It is well received by music and non-music classes.

On Film Music

A program which takes the audience through the history of film music and explains the mechanics of film music composition and adaptation. With video and audio examples featuring many of Marc’s own pieces and film cues the participants learn what an integral part music plays in the art of film music. Discussion includes notablemoments in film music history, placement of music, scoring, and terminology. A more in depth, multi-session program is also available.

“Marc Hoffman gave an educational, entertaining presentation on film music composition to the public at our library. He was well prepared for the multimedia lecture/concert, which included three pages of film score terminology and trivia, movie clips, audio clips, live performance, a sample of written film scores, and showing two recommended books. He encouraged and answered questions. Our audience was adult, but I think youngsters would also enjoy the presentation. We will definitely invite him back. I highly recommend him for school or library programs.”

“The class I chose to attend consisted of 15 people, both musicians and those simply interested in knowing more about composition. Marc was flexible enough to accomodate each members questions, but organized enough to keep to his lecture topics. He included some history of music as well as sample recordings. The information Marc provided was thorough and help. I had attended a concert previously and was impressed by his talent.”
